LIBERTY TOWNSHIP, OH (FOX19) - Undercover drug agents in Butler County have made what they are describing as one of the biggest pot busts in the county's history.
Agents raided a home in the 5700 block of Sunrise View Circle in Liberty Township and found 1,050 marijuana plants and an elaborate growing operation inside. The street value of the drugs is estimated at well over a million dollars.
Two brothers were taken into custody. Phuc Ky Luong, 50, and A Bay Luong, 46, are both facing felony cultivation of marijuana charges. They were found hiding in an attic and taken to the Butler County Jail, where they are both being held on a million dollar bond. They will be in court again on Nov. 3.
Around 8:40 Wednesday night, a neighbor called the fire department after smelling a "strong chemical odor" in the area. Upon arrival, a firefighter looked through a basement window and spotted the pot.
Butler County Sheriff's deputies and undercover agents from the Sheriff's Regional Narcotics (BURN) taskforce responded to the scene to discover the elaborate growing operation. Some of the plants were already harvested and were hanging in separate rooms to dry.
Police say A Bay Luong is reportedly from Vietnam and living in Monroe. Phuc Ky Long is a legal resident from China with a listed address in Oakland, Calif.
This is the third large drug bust Butler County officials have made this month. On Oct. 9, officials seized 268 pounds of marijuana and arrested two people. On Oct. 19, 255 pounds of marijuana was seized and one person was arrested.
"It's a fulltime challenge to combat the war on drugs within the United States, particular in Butler County," said Sheriff Richard Jones. "It makes no difference when the drugs are being transported or manufactured from other countries or grown locally. I will not tolerate this type of drug activity in my county."
